Description | A MOUNTAIN INTERLUDE The air was thick and heavy with sun-heat. No shadow quivered. The men stood fixed and stared. The women held large white handkerchiefs to their eyes and wept silently. The children looked on with awe. No splinter, no visible remembrance was there. Wilhurst, Kentucky was gone. The water came in the night and took all things with it. Those few who now stared at the muddy yellow sand had come from the Branches to worship at the service for their dead. The cemetery lay quietly hidden on the hilltop. Here and there a greyed and weathered stone still marked a grave. Grass and weeds covered them all. They were of the hill. But seven fresh graves at the foot of the hill lay startling in their newness. No warmth covered them. Not yet. "Grandmother's there." "Two children are in this one." "Five bodies have not been found. " "My mother and father, here. " Their kin stood with them. They remembered their cries. Then. . . They walked on up the path to the hilltop and sat down. Not , one sob was heard. The grief was deep and restrained. A man sat with his arms around his wife and comforted her with soft whispers. A girl moved her fingers thru the cool grass. The mother who had been found in a tree sat alone. The water had torn her nine year old daughter from her arms. An uncle spoke to his sister. The preacher gave them hymn books. His wife set up the music rack. They all stood. The cornet sounded the first few notes. The song was sung straight out over the hills. And its refrain, "No tear-dimmed eyes - no sad farewells". They knelt in prayer. The preacher prayed. They bent over till their foreheads almost touched the ground. One hand covered their eyes. The other stretched out and held the earth. Each prayed his own prayer, aloud, and rocked with the mumbled chant. "Oh God! Praise the Lord! Yes, Lord. Oh God! Amen. Praise the Lord!" A peace fell upon them. And they were comforted. |
