1) Do we need to formally approve the definition of an Emeritus Member and
submit it for a vote by the membership as change in the By-Laws?
2) Should we amend By-Laws to permit re-election of Council Members?
Col1mi ttee recommeooations: 1) Emer i tus members: The Committee was a 11 ttle
divided upon this issue. First, we all agreed the statement offerred by Curtis
Chubb (see below) was accurate and appropriate to define this category
ofmembership. However, the matter of a revision of the By-Laws to include this
statement was not so strong. The purpose of including this statement in the ByLaws
would be to avoid lengthy, repttitious discussions of this topic at future
Council meetings as occurred in Chicago recently, despite a note in the Council
minutes from several years ago concerning this same issue. I f a revision of the
By-Laws is recommended by CounCil, the definition below should be offered as the
amendment.
Emeritus Member: Any member who has retired and who is worthy of the
deSignation of Emeritus. Emeritus membership requires the recommendation of the
Membership Conmittee and approval of the Executive Council. Emeritus Members
will not pay membership dues and will not receive the Journal of Andrology but
will receive all mailings and will have Annual Meeting registration fees waived.
2) Re-election of Council Members: It would appear that personal expense
to attend the two Council meetings each year and the level of interest among
members within the Society to serve as Officers and to be active participants in
the SOCiety are the major points to consider with regard to one side of this
issue. The other point would be to "share" this responsibility among more
members than a select few so as to draw other viewpoints, abilities and
personalities into the decision-making and direction of the Society. The
Conmittee suggestion would be to encourage participation by a broad base of
members with a high level of interest in Society matters but that in some cases
Council members could succeed themselves for one additional term, but that more
than two consecutive terms would not be recommended.
