and Mrs. Stanton's dear letter
to me gave us both great pleas-
ure. Your assurances of con-
tinued affection are very pre-
cious to us, and now, relying
on that friendship, I am going
to have a frank and confi-
dential talk with you
this morning. I cannot ans-
wer Mrs. Stanton's letter until
I have done everything possi-
ble to prevent future misun-
derstanding. I need not say
for you know it well, that
I love you both as I love
no other friends outside of
