Iowa State College landscape architecture professor Philip Elwood takes students on a tour of the southern and eastern United States in 1931. In Florida they went to Highland Hammock near Siebring, saw a cypress swamp, a grapefruit orchard and lake. It was then on to a bird sanctuary at Lake Wales where they saw its "Bok" or "singing tower" and saw flamingos in the lake.
Also near Siebring they visited Ponce de Leon Springs where they saw the water feature that pumps 60,000 gallons per minute designed by A. D. Taylor of Cleveland Ohio, informal lake and old mill, and the hotel and swimming pool at Ponce de Leon Spa. Then heading back for the Atlantic coast, they visited St. Augustine where they went to see the remains of the old fort, the cathedral on the city square, and the old slave market.
